The Word Written on Our Hearts
God’s Word on our Hearts
God’s Word is no longer written on tablets of stone but on our hearts of flesh
Throughout their journey in the Promised Land, the Israelites carried the Ten Commandments, written by the very finger of God on stone tablets and placed in the Ark of the Covenant. This ark housed not only the law but also the tangible presence of God. His power dwelt there, guiding and shaping His people.
Today, as believers, we no longer carry physical tablets of stone, yet we still bear God's word within us. The same divine hand that inscribed the law on stone now writes His truth on our hearts. This means we carry His presence wherever we go. When we engage with scripture—reading it, meditating on it, and living it out—it becomes written within us. Our obedience and faithfulness are evidence that His word is alive in us.
A New Covenant: Written on Hearts, Not Stone
The Bible repeatedly affirms this transformation:
Hebrews 8:10 – "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people."
Jeremiah 31:33 – "For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people."
2 Corinthians 3:3 – "And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts."
This is a profound shift from external obedience to internal transformation. Under the old covenant, the law was an external set of rules. Under the new covenant, God inscribes His law within us, making it a part of who we are.
A Covenant of Love
Jeremiah 31:31-34 expands on this new covenant, showing how it is deeply personal. No longer do we need intermediaries to teach us who God is. He reveals Himself directly to those who seek Him. This is not just a shift in how we receive His commands but a promise of intimacy and relationship with Him.
Ezekiel 11:19 reinforces this: "And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh."
This means that instead of rigidly following commandments etched in stone, we live by the law of love. Jesus emphasized this when He said, "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another" (John 13:34). When God's love is written in our hearts, it naturally overflows into our actions, shaping how we live and interact with others.
Reviving an Old Practice: Singing the Word
Reflecting on this truth, I remember a time when I wrote Bible verses into songs and sang them continuously. It filled me with joy and a sense of God’s power surrounding me. Music has a unique way of embedding truth deep into our spirits, reinforcing what God has written on our hearts.
I should really do that again.
Maybe you should too.
If God's word is to be written on our hearts, one of the best ways to internalize it is through song, meditation, and active engagement. Whether through worship, scripture memorization, or daily acts of faith, we carry His word within us and let it shape our lives.
So, how will you let God write His word on your heart today?
